They made camp in the snow near a large frozen lake. For three days they hunted, but they had nothing to show for it. The third night a windstorm came up. They lay in their tent listening to the wind howling and the trees whipping back and forth. To see the storm better, the hunter opened the tent flap. What he saw startled him. There wasn't a breath of air, stirring, and the trees were standing perfectly still. Yet he could hear the wind howling. And the more he listened, the more it sounded as if it were calling DéFago's name.

The And the Wind Cries... Wendigo

"Da-faaaaaaaaay-go!" it called. "Da-faaaaaaaaay-go!" "I must be losing my mind," the hunter thought. But DéFago had gotten out of his sleeping bag. He was huddled in a corner of the tent, his head buried in his arms. "What's this all about?" the hunter asked. "It's nothing," DéFago said. But the wind continued to call to him. And DéFago became more tense and more restless."Da-faaaaaaaaay-go!" it called. "Da-faaaaaaaaay-go!"

Suddenly, he jumped to his feet, and he began to run from the tent. But the hunter grabbed him and wrestled him to the ground. "You can't leave me out here," the hunter shouted. Then the wind called again, and DéFago broke loose and ran into the darkness. The hunter could hear him screaming as he went. Again and again he cried, "oh, my fiery feet, my burning feet of fire..." Then his voice faded away, and the wind died down.

The hunter followed the tracks out to the middle of the lake, but there they disappeared. At first, he thought that DéFago had fallen through the ice, but there wasn't any hole. Then he thought that something had pulled him off the ice into the sky. But that made no sense. As he stood wondering what had happened, the wind picked up again. Soon it was howling as it had the night before. Then he heard DéFago's voice. It was coming from up above, and again he heard DéFago screaming, "...My fiery feet, my burning feet..." But there was nothing to be seen. Now the hunter wanted to leave that place as fast as he could. He went back to camp and packed. Then he left some food for DéFago, and he started out. Weeks later, he reached civilization. The following year he went back to hunt in that area again. He went to the same trading post to look for a guide. The people there could not explain what had happened to DéFago that night. But they had not seen him since then.

"Maybe it was the Wendigo," one of them said, and he laughed. "It's supposed to come with the wind. It drags you along at great speed until your feet are burned away, and more of you than that. Then it carries you into the sky, and it drops you. It's just a crazy story, but that's what some of the Indians say."

Common folk say that wendigo move on the winter wind, and only breaths of icy air ever betray their presence. Wendigo are lanky, white-furred monstrosities with long limbs and nightmarishly large mouths filled with razor-sharp teeth. Wiry and fast, they can scramble across even the slickest surfaces, and cling to walls and ceilings underground. This, combined with their silent, stalking gait, makes them extremely difficult to see coming. Young wendigo have a pink coloring to their mouth and tongue, which becomes a deep purple color the older and larger a wendigo grows.

Beyond homicidal trees, there's Blackwood's Wendigo. A horror from the deep untouched woods, it's "the Call of the Wild personified," as one character describes it, which calls to travelers with a voice that "resembles all the minor sounds of the Bush--wind, falling water, cries of the animals."

Wendigos are excellent hunters, either during the day or at night, as Rayne said herself, "It's a very-damn-near-perfect hunter. It's smarter than you." and, "This thing is a very good hunter in the day, but an even unbelievably better hunter at night." There are few possibilities to defeat a wendigo during the day, but it is next to impossible to defeat them at night, since it is their favorite period to hunt. Also despite being animal like, Wendigos are intelligent, as intelligent as humans or maybe even more intelligent, thus making them even more dangerous.

WendigoThe Horned Shadow about to take another victim.StatusRareCreator(s)Humans from North AmericaOriginSpawned into belief by Native American tribes.DescriptionHumans who have possessed by malevolent spirits from the Ether.Wendigo are creatures which are created when a malevolent Etheric spirit possesses a human who has consumed human flesh. Over a period of time, the cannibalistic human steadily degenerates in mind and grows in power, and their hunger for the flesh of man. Notably, wendigo spirits are only known to possess victims within the northern reaches of the world, as the Wyldling spirits who create wendigo represent starvation brought on by winter.

As years pass, wendigo will begin to enter cycles of activity, wherein they sleep for decades, and awaken for a few short weeks to gather victims and feed. As a wendigo ages, these cycles will grow longer, as they spend more and more time in hibernation.

Wendigo are created by malevolent spirits possessing humans. This can only occur once a human has consumed the flesh of their fellow man. This act of cannibalism allows the wendigo spirit a gateway into their mind and body, enabling them to steadily transform them into a creature of unending hunger. Slowly but surely, the soon to be wendigo will begin gaining an increase in strength, speed, and fortitude, and desire to consume human flesh. Their bodies will become tall, gaunt, and emaciated, their skin stretching pale and tight across their bodies. Eventually, their human personalities will wither away, and all that shall remain will be a predator, obsessed with trying to satisfy their unending hunger.

Wendigo prefer to consume prey alive, at their lair. When hunting, they will typically incapacitate their prey and drag them back to their lairs, where they can be consumed at the wendigo's leisure. While they do usually incapacitate and capture any humans they find in their territory, if a wendigo is injured by someone, they are likely to attempt to kill them out of spite, and eat them later. Oftentimes, wendigo will also preserve some of their victims so that when they next awaken, they will have an initial meal to start their activity cycle.

After their transformation, wendigo loose their sentience, being completely consumed by their hunger for human flesh. However, they still are possessed of a predatory intelligence, and while they do not remember the meaning of most forms of speech, they are able to recognize that certain sounds, such as screams and cries for help, have an emotional hold over people. Thusly, they are able to use screams to lure people towards them, where they can be taken.

Wendigo's prefer to lair in places that are isolated and dark, where they can safely hide away for decades at a time without being discovered. However, the biomes they live in will always be frigid, as the spirits that create wendigo are tied to cold.

Supernatural Strength: Gifted with horrific physical strength, wendigo are able to easily dismember most creatures with their clawed hands. Flipping cars is easily within the realms of possibility for them, and they are able to rip through many types of metal with little difficulty.

Telepathy: Wendigo possess a few telepathic abilities which can be used to aid in their hunts. Their effective range is anywhere within a wendigo's line of sight. Older, more powerful wendigo are more likely to display more advanced versions of these abilities.

Fire: As wendigo are created by spirits of cold and hunger, they are repulsed by heat, especially fire. They are highly flammable, and can be set ablaze by relatively minor flames. Wounds caused by fire are incredibly slow to heal, and cause absolute agony to the wendigo. Being consumed by flame is one of the only ways to kill them. Such is a wendigo's fear of fire that they will usually flee before even a small torch.

Iron: Due to the fact that wendigo are being possessed by a spirit, an extraplanar being, the touch of pure iron causes them pain. However, it will not kill them, even if they receive what would be equivalent to a lethal wound to a human from it.

Description: Wendigo typically appear as gaunt, emaciated humanoids between seven and nine feet in height. Certain individuals appear more human, with pale skin and clawed fingers, whilst others are noticeably more distorted, possessing antlers, fur, and faces resembling deer skulls. These physical differences indicate the age of a wendigo, with the more humanoid creatures being younger and less progressed in their transformation. Wendigo prey exclusively on humans, preferring to capture live prey and return them to their lairs, which usually consist of cold, dark caverns that are relatively isolated. Survivors of wendigo captivity have stated that wendigo prefer to consume their prey live. 2ff7e9595c
